A New Liturgy for Lighting the Advent Candles

Words inviting us into the light and warmth of this holy time.

First Sunday of Advent

From Isaiah 51.5

In this season of Advent we open ourselves to the presence of the God who comes in Jesus Christ and we commit ourselves to work with eager anticipation for the coming reign of God when justice and peace will be firmly established for all.

Through Isaiah, God promises:

“I will bring near my deliverance swiftly, my salvation has gone out and my arms will rule the peoples; the coastlands wait for me, and for my arm they hope.”

May the light of hope shine through us and brighten our world.

Second Sunday of Advent

From Isaiah 2.4

In this season of Advent we open ourselves to the presence of the God who comes in Jesus Christ and we commit ourselves to work with eager anticipation for the coming reign of God when justice and peace will be firmly established for all.

Through Isaiah, God promises:

“Nations shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning-hooks;
nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore.”

May the light of peace shine through us and brighten our world.

Third Sunday of Advent

From Isaiah 55.12

In this season of Advent we open ourselves to the presence of the God who comes in Jesus Christ and we commit ourselves to work with eager anticipation for the coming reign of God when justice and peace will be firmly established for all.

Through Isaiah, God promises:

“You shall go out in joy, and be led back in peace; the mountains and the hills before you shall burst into song, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.”

May the light of joy shine through us and brighten our world.

Fourth Sunday of Advent

From Isaiah 54.10

In this season of Advent we open ourselves to the presence of the God who comes in Jesus Christ and we commit ourselves to work with eager anticipation for the coming reign of God when justice and peace will be firmly established for all.

Through Isaiah, God promises:

“The mountains may depart and the hills be removed, but my steadfast love shall not depart from you, and my covenant of peace shall not be removed, says God, who has compassion on you.”

May the light of love shine through us and brighten our world.

Christmas Eve

From Isaiah 60.2-3

In this season of Advent we open ourselves to the presence of the God who comes in Jesus Christ and we commit ourselves to work with eager anticipation for the coming reign of God when justice and peace will be firmly established for all.

Through Isaiah, God promises:

“God will arise upon you, and God’s glory will appear over you.  Nations shall come to your light, and rulers to the brightness of your dawn. “

May the light of hope, peace, joy, and love shine through us and brighten our world.

Christmas Day

From Isaiah 11.6-9

In this season of Christmas we open ourselves to the presence of the God who comes in Jesus Christ and we commit ourselves to work with eager anticipation for the coming reign of God when justice and peace will be firmly established for all.

Through Isaiah, God promises:

“The wolf shall live with the lamb, the leopard shall lie down with the kid, the calf and the lion and the fatling together, and a little child shall lead them…

They will not hurt or destroy on all my holy mountain; for the earth will be full of the knowledge of God as the waters cover the sea. On that day the root of Jesse shall stand as a signal to the peoples; the nations shall inquire of the Messiah, and the Messiah’s dwelling shall be glorious. “

May the light of hope, peace, joy, and love shine through us and brighten our world.
